The Oscars may be without a host this year, but it still opened with a bang, Queen and Adam Lambert exploded onto the stage with a rocking performance of We Will Rock You, which got all the audience on their feet, dancing and singing along. They followed up with We are the Champions before launching into the awards.
This is a year where no one can complain about too many white people winning. Both Supporting Actor and Actress awards go to actors of colour. Mahershala Ali takes home his second Oscar, for Green Book. His first win was for 2017’s Moonlight. He gave a rousing speech, thanking his grandmother, who encouraged him to pursue acting and sticking with it. Regina King beat The Favourite actresses Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone with her performance in If Beale Street Could Talk.
Spike Lee took home the Best Original Screenplay Award for BlacKkKlansman, his first Oscar win, having been nominated five times in all. Then, of course, Alfonso Cuaron took home the night’s highest honour- Best Director for his work on Roma, which also won the Best Foreign Language film. Incidentally, Roma is the first foreign language film to win the Best Director accolade.
Actor Keegan-Michael Key made the most dramatic entrance. He descended from the top with an Umbrella, introducing Bette Midler for her performance of Mary Poppins Returns.
We know there was going to be a star-studded presenter list, but nothing is quite as amazing as seeing Wayne’s World’s Mike Myers and Dana Carvey going onstage to present Best Picture Nominee Bohemian Rhapsody. If you remember, the pair rocked out to the Queen’s song in Wayne’s World back in 1992! While the pair did not dress like their characters from the movie, they brought the best lines:
Myers: "We're not worthy!"
Carvey: "I think I'm gonna hurl."
Myers: "Don't hurl. 'Cause if you hurl, I'll spew."
Carvey: "If you spew, I'll blow chunks. So I shall not hurl."
The best gentleman award of the night goes to Chris Evans, who lent a helping arm to Regina King, who was wrestling with her gown while trying to get on stage. He escorted her to the steps.
Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper gave a loving and intense performance of Shallow, sending shivers down our backs. And did you know that she is wearing a diamond necklace worth $30 million and was last worn by Audrey Hepburn?
The Favourite was nominated for 10 awards but only took home one, for Best Actress (Olivia Colman). Bohemian Rhapsody won four out of five award nominations, missing the grandest prize- Best Picture, which went to Green Book.
