If there’s anything that the Screen Actors Guild 2019 Awards have shown us, it is that Rami Malek and Glenn Close are the ones to beat at the upcoming Academy Awards. These two have been collecting accolades at the recent award shows, and do not show signs of slowing down.

Megan Mullally from the sitcom Will and Grace hosted the SAG awards. Her jokes delivered in a deadpan manner worked for the series, as well as the awards.

There were a few surprises at the awards, and we’re not just talking about the results. It’s a pleasant surprise to see the pairing of Close and Michael Douglas 32 years after the release of their movie, Fatal Attraction. Both of them may be older, but still commands the stage and screen with their presence and talent.

The main cast of Crazy Rich Asians was on stage to introduce the movie to thunderous applause. Lead actor Henry Golding finally makes an appearance on the awards stage. He has been missing award shows thus far, due to other commitments. He joined Michelle Yeoh, Constance Wu and Ken Jeong.

As for results, Emily Blunt gets her best revenge for being snubbed at the Oscars for her performance in A Quiet Place. She won the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role. This is also her first ever SAG.

As usual, Close gave a powerful acceptance speech, and the veteran actress is as appreciative as ever for her win. With her sweeping through the Golden Globes, The Critics’ Choice awards and now, the SAG, she IS the one to beat at the Oscars.

Wakanda Forever! Black Panther collected two awards, for Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture and Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. Lead actor Chadwick Boseman was emotional during his slightly rambling but impactful speech on how the award means to the cast of colour. He spoke about the difficulties faced by the cast every day, knowing that they are talented but not being given an equal chance in their line of work. But Black Panther changes all that, it’s not only validation of their hard work but also gives the cast an opportunity to exemplify a world that they wanted to see and pave the way for future actors of colour. The Favourite, which scored big in Oscar nominations, went home with nothing.
