A Quiet Place isn’t just a horror movie, but also a drama about parenting, dealing with loss and surviving. John Krasinski cleverly balances emotions, fear and our innate survival instincts to craft out a brilliantly delivered story about a family’s journey to beat the mysterious monsters that hunt by sound.
The movie kept us on the edge of our seats, tensed at every hint of sound that would potentially lead to disastrous consequences. To make our hearts beat even faster, Krasinski threw in a baby in the mix. It worked. We were all kept on our toes.
Although they initially avoid working together on projects, but this was too delicious a part to pass up for Krasinski’s real-life wife, Emily Blunt. And thank goodness for that. The birthing scene was easily the most gripping scene in the movie.
A Quiet Place scored USD 332.2 million dollars at the Box Office and predictably, a sequel is in the works. And here’s what we know so far:
1. John Krasinski’s involvement
John Krasinski is now working on the sequel’s script and is set to direct the sequel, much to our relief. There were initial rumours that he might not be involved in the movie at all, but now we have nothing to worry about.
2. Who’s In It?
Blunt is returning, as are the two kids, played brilliantly by Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe, are likely to return as well. And we suspect more drama unfolding, since the kids might be swimming in guilt about their father. And there’s a need to cast a boy as the youngest addition to the family. Beyond that, it has just been announced that Cillian Murphy is now added to the sequel’s cast. He plays a man with a mysterious past and is interested to join the family unit. Known more recently for his role in the TV series Peaky Blinders, striking Irish actor Murphy once played the Scarecrow in The Dark Knight Rises (2012), and we are eagerly anticipating his performance in the movie. Do the Abbot family have to worry about humans as well as monsters?
3. The Release Date
It’s common for movie studios to jump into the sequel bandwagon and rush out the second movie as quickly as possible while the iron is still hot. Thankfully, this isn’t the case for A Quiet Place. Paramount, the studios behind the movie, is determined only to kickstart the sequel only when there’s a solid script in place, which we know Krasinski is working on now. After all, The Incredibles sequel took a staggering 14 years to it the screen. We do know now that the movie is set for a 2020 release date.
4. What’s the Story About?
Screenwriters for the first movie, Scott Beck and Bryan Wood have already some ideas for the sequel. The duo reportedly wrote a lot of material for the first movie that didn’t make it onscreen. Woods shared that they had, “so many scary ideas that just didn’t even make it into the final script, let alone the final movie.” It wasn’t that the ideas were bad, but more like they were too expensive to put in place. Judging from the success of the first movie, budget may not be a problem of the sequel.
5. The Connection with the Cloverfield Universe
There are certainly parallels that could be drawn between the two movies. A Quiet Place’s producer Andrew Form shared that the idea on about a crossover between A Quiet Place and Cloverfield had been considered, “That was one of those things that, I guess it crossed our mind and we had spoken to our representatives about that possibility. It was weird timing, though, because when we were writing the script, 10 Cloverfield Lane was at Paramount. We were actually talking to an executive there about this film, and it felt from pitch form that there might be a crossover, but when we finally took the final script to Paramount, they saw it as a totally different movie.” Although it doesn’t look like a crossover may happen, but you never know.
