Golden Globes Nominations Are Out!

The Awards season is starting again, with the Golden Globes leading the charge. The nomination list has just been out and A Star Is Born, The Favourite and The Green Book each earns five Globe nods. BlacKkKlansman earns four.

BlacKkKlansman

Here’s the list of nominations.

Best Motion Picture- Drama

BlacKkKlansman

Black Panther

Bohemian Rhapsody

If Beal Street Could Talk

A Star Is Born

Out of the five movies, Black Panther and A Star is Born are probably the popular ones to win. BUT, BlacKkKlansman could just come out from the back and nab this one. Spike Lee's biographical comedy-drama about a black undercover detective taking down a chapter of the KluKluxx Klan runs a gamut of emotions for its audience, from mirth, to nervousness to fearful for the life of Ron Stallworth.

What’s Snubbed?

What about First Man? Sure, there are two biography films in the running, but First Man tells a good a story of Neil Armstrong as the two nominated movies. It may not have the razzle-dazzle of Bohemian Rhapsody, or the comedy in BlacKkKlansman, but still, it’s a well-researched, faithful story to the first man on the moon.

Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy

Crazy Rich Asians

Crazy Rich Asians

The Favourite

Green Book

Mary Poppins Returns

Vice

It’s hard to say. Mary Poppins Returns is definitely a fan favourite, although Christian Bale brings a lot of weight to Vice. Then we have Crazy Rich Asians; if the movie wins, it would be such a historic victory, for both Hollywood for being so inclusive, and to all Asian actors, so many of whom have been playing supporting roles for so long.

Who’s Snubbed?

This isn’t really a snub but it would be so awesome if Deadpool 2 was nominated in this category, Just it’s end credits alone should be nominated in this category.

Best Director - Motion Picture

Bradley Cooper, A Star Is Born

Alfonso Cuaron, Roma

Peter Farrelly, Green Book

Spike Lee, BlacKkKlansman

Adam McKay, Vice

Not bad for Cooper, who’s nominated for his directorial effort, but this may either be Lee or McKay’s win. Both directors pace their movies well, adding enough humour to lighten up heavy subjects. And if Black Panther is nominated for Best Motion Picture, why didn’t director Ryan Coogler get a director nod as well?

Who’s Snubbed?

It may not be flashy or funny nor romantic, but Damien Chazelle gives us an insight into an otherwise fiercely private man, and he told the story with enough finesse that even satisfy the Armstrong family. Why doesn’t it satisfy the Hollywood Foreign Press?

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama

Glenn Close, The Wife

Lady Gaga.  A Star Is Born

Nicole Kidman, Destroyer

Melissa McCarthy, Can You Ever Forgive Me?

Rosamund Pike, A Private War

All eyes are surely on Lady Gaga for her star-turning role in A Star is Born. And she might just win it, although Pike gives the performance of her lifetime in A Private War, as journalist Marie Colvin. Pike transformed not just physically into Colvin, but her speech and mannerisms are spot-on.

Who’s Snubbed?

Toni Collette, that’s who! Her performance in Hereditary, as a mother trapped in a waking nightmare, is gripping, and has us rooting for her. Horror films are typically overlooked, but her stunning performance shouldn’t be. And how about Natalie Portman in Vox Lux? The actress turns in an enjoyable performance as a diva pop star, but didn’t impress the Globes enough.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama

Bradley Cooper, A Star Is Born

Willem Dafoe, At Eternity's Gate

Lucas Hedges, Boy Erased

Rami Malek, Bohemian Rhapsody

John David Washington, BlacKkKlansman

All five actors have great performances. Again, Cooper’s A Star Is Born is probably the popular vote, but Malek’s complete transformation into Freddie Mercury is so convincing that he should win an award just for that.

Who’s Snubbed?

What’s happening? First, First Man got subbed in the movie and director category, and now, Ryan Gosling is snubbed in the acting category for this sensitive portrayal of Neil Armstrong. What gives, the Hollywood Foreign Press?

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy

Tully

Emily Blunt, Mary Poppins Returns

Olivia Colman, The Favourite

Elsie Fisher, Eighth Grade

Charlize Theron, Tully

Constance Wu, Crazy Rich Asians

This will be a fight between the Nanny and the Mother. Blunt and Theron will have the biggest fight for the award, no doubt.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy

Christian Bale, Vice

Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mary Poppins Returns

Viggo Mortensen, Green Book

Robert Redford, The Old Man and the Gun

John C. Reilly, Stan & Ollie

With Bale’s startling transformation into Dick Cheney, bald-headed and all, it’s really easy to see him walk away with the Globe.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture

Amy Adams, Vice

Claire Foy, First Man

Regina King, If Beale Street Could Talk

Emma Stone, The Favourite

Rachel Weisz, The Favourite

These are all fantastic actresses giving class-act performances. And finally, we see First Man’s presence here, thanks to Foy’s touching performances as Neil Armstrong’s wife. Far from playing the Queen in The Crown, Foy has shown her versatility in slipping into any character, and for that, she deserves to win.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture

Mahershala Ali, Green Book

Timothee Chalamet, Beautiful Boy

Adam Driver, BlacKkKlansman

Richard E. Grant, Can You Ever Forgive Me?

Sam Rockwell, Vice

Rockwell is back after his bountiful year in 2017 with Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri. But this may just be Chalamet’s year, for his portrayal of a boy on a slippery slope to drug-filled life, only to pick himself up.

Best Animated Feature Film

Incredibles 2

Isle of Dogs

Mirai

Ralph Breaks the Internet

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Isle of Dogs wins with its originality, but Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse stuns with its animated graphics, which has audiences enraptured. And it’s plenty original too.

Best Screenplay - Motion Picture

Alfonso Cuaron, Roma

Deborah Davis & Tony McNamara, The Favourite

Barry Jenkins, If Beale Street Could Talk

Adam McKay, Vice

Brian Hayes Currie, Peter Farrelly & Nick Vallelonga, Green Book

This could be anyone’s game, all these movies carry weight and hold audiences’ attention.

The Golden Globes ceremony will take place on January 6, 2019.
