The end of Avengers: Infinity War wasn’t quite what we expected. We thought Thanos (Josh Brolin) wouldn’t be able to get that last Infinity Stone. We really weren’t expecting him to snap his fingers at all. After all, all the Avengers were assembled (well, minus Hawkeye and Ant-man) to take him on.

As it turns out, Thanos is THAT formidable. And he did snap his fingers. A few of our favourite heroes died tragically, and half the world turn into ash in the wind. So, where does that leave us? This can’t be the end, can it? After all, there is an upcoming Spider-man (Tom Holland) movie, and let’s not forget, there’s also the fourth Avengers movie.

Avengers: Infinity War

And why did Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), who in the first half of the movie was so hell-bent on keeping the Time Stone away from Thanos, so willingly gives it up in order to save Tony (Robert Downey Jr.)? Well, if you remember, sometime in the middle of the movie, he travelled to the future and look at all the possibilities of defeating Thanos, and they only stood one chance out of millions of scenarios. That probably has something to do with him surrendering the stone: Tony Stark must be kept alive.

Theories and speculations are rife the moment Avengers: Infinity War ended. No one is willing to believe half of our beloved heroes are dead. Especially not the wholesome teenager Peter Parker, who got blown away in the arms of his idol, Tony Stark.

Who’s really dead, who might not be and who’s still alive and well? Let’s break it down.

Who’s Really Dead?

For starters, Loki (Tom Hiddleston). The God of Mischief didn’t turn into ash after the mad titan snapped his fingers. He was killed when Thanos wrapped his fingers around Loki’s throat. So, we could safely say Loki’s pretty dead. What a pity, because most of the time, he’s been pretty evil, and just when he wanted to do something good, he died. Heimdall (Idris Elba), too died around the same time as Loki, killed by one of Thanos’s “children” for using one last bit of his power in an attempt to stop Thanos. He, too, isn’t coming back.

Vision (Paul Bettany) doesn’t look like he’ll be back either. After all, his entire being comes from a collection of power, and his essence is contained in that Mind Stone, which sits nicely on the Infinity Gauntlet.

The only questionable death here is Gamora (Zoe Saldana). We know Thanos sacrificed her for the all-might Soul Stone, but if you’ve seen the end of the movie, you’ll notice a young Gamora having a nice little chat with Thanos in an other-worldly place. Where is that place? It’s speculated that somehow, Gamora didn’t die, like Loki kind of die, but trapped, in the Soul Stone instead. Did you notice the orange-ish environment they were in, just like the colour of the Soul Stone? And we do know that there is a third Guardians of the Galaxy movie, and what are the Guardians without Gamora? Unless it’s happening in another timeline. But no one knows for sure.

Who’s turned to Ash And Might not Really be Dead?

It was pretty alarming when we start seeing that one by one, the Avengers are turning into ash. Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), Spider-man, Doctor Strange, Bucky (Sebastian Stan) and all the Guardians. Are they really gone? Comic book enthusiasts quickly came up with the theory that these heroes, along with half the world, may be trapped inside the Soul stone, but very much alive. This might be the only plausible explanation, because we already know there are numerous Marvel movies to be made with these heroes. So they can’t all be gone forever, especially not King T’Challa!

Black Panther

Who’s Alive and Kicking?

The original Avengers, that is. Iron Man, Captain America (Chris Evans), The Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Thor (Chris Hemsworth ) and the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) are spared from becoming dust, and left bewildered at the sudden loss of their comrades. This also means they are the confirmed cast in the fourth Avengers instalment.

Captain America: Civil War

What Next?

The next Marvel movie is Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) Incidentally, at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, we saw Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) frantically sending communications to someone just before he disappears, and as it turns out, it was Captain Marvel that he was trying to reach. However, as we know Captain Marvel is set in the 1980s, where Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) is still alive and Nick Fury has both his eyes. So we can rule that possibility out.

The fourth Avengers instalment is announced to be released in May 2019, just two months after Captain Marvel. Perhaps this means that the living Avengers will be figuring out their next steps. And we know the whole gang’s back, cos the cast list reveals just about every character in this movie, along with Ant-man, the Wasp and Captain Marvel. And even dead characters like Loki and Vision. We won’t be sure if they are back as flashbacks or in the flesh, but all these just makes us anticipate the movie even more!
