Since Jaws leapt onto the screen in 1975, we’ve developed a fascination with shark attack movies. There are sharks wreaking havoc, a holiday gone wrong with sharks, a research involving sharks that went awry and sharks that return from the dead.

This year, there’s The Meg, the latest in a long string of movies about sharks. The premise is simple, The Megalodon, a giant shark thought to be extinct, is very much alive and on the hunt.  And Jason Statham, who stars as a rescue diver, must conquer his fears and venture into the deep sea on another rescue mission. Before you catch The Meg in the theatres, watch these five great shark movies first!

Jaws (1975)

Jaws

This is the movie that started it all, and possibly the greatest shark movie ever made. A simple storyline about a great white shark causing havoc at a beach resort is all that’s needed. Back in the day, the technology wasn’t as advanced, but the fake sharks were convincing and frightening. The pacing, the suspense and the score all build up to a terrifying horror movie. The movie may be over 40 years ago, but the Jaws (Roy ScheiderRobert Shaw and ), is still as gripping now as it was back then. And that’s made so thanks to John William’s iconic score. Beach vacation attendance took a nose dive after the movie’s release, it’s not hard to imagine why.

Deep Blue Sea (1999)

Who can forget that iconic scene where Samuel L. Jackson’s character gave a rousing speech to encourage his companions, only to be abruptly eaten by a shark?

None of us saw that coming and that’s what makes the movie such a fun watch. The movie centres around a group of scientists on an isolated research facility to find a cure to Alzheimer’s disease, experimenting on sharks. What they didn’t count on is that these sharks are highly intelligent and not willing to be used as guinea pigs. They turned on the humans and are bent on destroying the facility. And one of them ate Samuel L. Jackson. After this, I don’t think any scientist would be using sharks for any sort of experiment.

Sharknado (2013)

This movie falls into the category of “it’s so bad it’s good”. What started as made-for-television disaster comedy about a waterspout that lifts sharks out of the ocean and deposits them in Los Angeles evolved into a film series that sees its sixth film released this year. Ian Ziering and Tara Reid star as husband and wife team who somehow has an affinity with encountering “sharknadoes” wherever they go. The scenes are intentionally cheesy and you really have to suspend reality to enjoy it. In fact, the movie has earned fans even from movie stars, many whom made cameos in the film series, including Olivia Newton-John. I don’t think we have to worry about this one. Clearly, as long as we’re nowhere near Ian Ziering and Tara Reid, we are safe!

47 Meters Down (2017)

47 Meters Down

A pair of sisters (Mandy Moore, Claire Holt) vacation in Mexico and decide to go on an adventure to the sea, not swimming, but shark watching. Unfortunately, the shark cage that they were in was faulty and the sisters find themselves sinking into the bottom of the ocean, with their oxygen running out. To make things worse, menacing white sharks are circling right outside the cage. There’s enough suspense to keep us engaged and rooting for the sisters. However, suffice to say, none of us would be voluntarily entering shark cages on any vacation after this.

Ghost Shark (2013)

Living sharks are terrifying, but a dead shark coming back to life hell-bent on eating you is even more so. A great white shark was tortured and killed by a father and daughter team as punishment for eating their catch. As it sinks into the sea, it was somehow resurrected as a ghost shark, hungry for revenge. For once, the tables have turned and we find ourselves rooting for the ghost shark. In this case, the lesson here is: don’t torture sharks, you never know when they’ll come back to eat you.
