The Emoji Movie follows the life of a young emoji who is trying to find his place in the world, the "world" being the inside of a phone where he lives with all the other emojis. Director Tony Leondis wanted to examine some of the biggest issues with social media, such as fitting in and appearances versus reality, and it turns out that emojis offer a light-hearted backdrop to these important modern issues.
Just like the real world, social media is what you choose to make of it, and it is comforting to know that there will always be the perfect emoji to express exactly how you feel.
