2017’s Wonder Woman is a refreshing movie not just for women and DC fans but audiences worldwide. The Amazonian Women warriors fighting the good fight during the beach sequence was a breath-taking, gorgeously choreographed and beautifully executed sight. Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman herself is almost other-worldly. She really looked like an Amazonian, if there ever was one in real life.

With its huge success, it’s little surprise that a sequel comes into the picture. After all, the Patty Jenkins directed movie grossed $821.8 million worldwide, surpassing the box office gross of Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Justice League in the United States. After months of speculating and hinting, here’s what we have gathered on the Wonder Woman sequel.

Circa 1984

For some time, the movie was just known as Wonder Woman 2, but we know the sequel will be set in the 1980s. Apart from being in the title, Gadot posted a photo of Wonder Woman’s updated image on her Instagram in June, with a wavy 80s do and some subtle changes to her costume. The first movie was set in 1917 during the First World War. This one is most likely set during the Cold War.

What’s the Story?

There’s not much being revealed on this, although the tagline says “Fast forward to the 1980s as Wonder Woman’s next big screen adventure finds her facing an all-new foe: The Cheetah.” This brings us to the next point…

Who’s in It?

New cast members are announced in dribs and drabs. The cheetah mentioned above is being played by Kristen Wiig. Her appearance in the show was announced in June. As Wonder Woman’s nemesis, Cheetah goes by the name Barbara Minerva, and looks meek and nothing out of the ordinary, as seen in the released picture, showing a blonde, wavy-haired Wiig.

It’s pretty obvious Cheetah is the main villain, although, from the picture of Kristen Wiig, it’s hard to imagine that. It’ll be interesting though, to see how Barbara transformed from a timid girl into a full-blown villain.

Word is that Barbara and Diana started out as friends, not foes, which makes for even more dramatic fodder. In the comics, Barbara is Dr. Barbara Ann Minerva, a British archaeologist cursed to transform into a cheetah who has an appetite for human flesh.

Pedro Pascal, best known as Prince Oberon in Game of Thrones, will be in the sequel as well. He plays the role of, well, we don’t know yet. All we have right now is a very 80s-looking Pascal with Ken doll-like hairdo. Pascal might be playing a secondary villain, but it’s all speculation for now.

As for returning cast members, we get to see Chris Pine again! Wait, didn’t he die in the first movie? Steve Trevor sacrificed himself in the final fight against Ares, but he’ll be resurrected somehow. Our best bet is that he might be a descendant of Trevor. Here’s a picture of him looking very 80s in a tracksuit.

Naturally, Jenkins returns as director. This time, she will also wear the producer’s hat.

When is the Movie Coming Out?

Clearly, filming is already underway. It will be released on November 1, 2019. Can’t wait!
