Dogs have long been featured in movies since the days of silent movies. And it isn’t surprising, since dogs have always been human’s best friend, thanks to their playful nature. The quote “Whoever said you can’t buy happiness forgot about little puppies” reveals that dogs are man’s faithful companions.
What are the five most amazing Doggy movies that you could watch with your family and loved ones during the Chinese New Year holidays?
It won't take long to bring a smile on your face with this one. Presented in a documentary style, we are introduced to five dogs and their proud owners, who all come to Mayflower Kennel Club Dog Show held in Philadelphia to complete.
This year being the year of the Dog, Best in Show stands out among the list of my personal best to watch during the holiday seasons. It is a wickedly funny mockumentary that makes fun of the Philadelphia dog show and the movie attempts to show the similarities between the personal attributes of dog owners and the dogs themselves. There’s something raw and unrehearsed about the show that appeals. And oh - watch and find out who wins the dog show.
Did you know: A large part of the dialogue is improvised, lending to more candid and spontaneous performances from the cast (Parker Posey, Catherine O'Hara, Eugene Levy and more)
My Dog Skip is an emotional family drama filled with a roller coaster of emotions. The plotline revolves around a young boy Willie (Frankie Muniz) and his pet dog Skip, and is told through the eyes of Willie as an adult, reminiscing his childhood.
I’m a fan of movies that imitate true-life stories, especially those centred on animal abuse. However, this movie is goose bumps-raising and makes you appreciate the bond between Willie and his dog. My Dog Skip teaches the value of friendship and love, perfect for the little ones to learn. The bonus? The adorable dogs, of course!
Did you know: In all, there are six Jack Russell terriers that take turns to play Skip.
Max is a much-pampered dog who gets his owner’s undivided attention. So imagine his shock when she (the owner) returns one day with a stray dog, named Duke. Max doesn't really like his new companion - he feels competitive and insecure. However, the two pets resolve their differences when they were out fending for themselves when trying to escape from Animal Control and a really scary rabbit named “Snowball”, and his pack of sewer-dwelling animals who hate humans.
I’m sure from time to time, dog or pet owners would wonder what their pets are up to when they’re gone to work, and The Secret Life of Pets take his premise to extremely exaggerating and hilarious effects. This isn’t just a movie to watch during the festive holidays, but really, for every weekend viewing.
Did you know: There’s a scene at the park in the beginning where Gru from Despicable Me (2010) can be spotted walking his dog Kyle in the background.
My Dog Dou Dou is a heart-warming film about a gambler, his son and a special dog-named Dou Dou that is able to predict lottery numbers. This unusual ability gets discovered and soon after, unsavoury characters want Dou Dou to themselves. Ultimately, the movie is about salvation and learning what truly matters to us.
If you’re a dog lover and want to watch a touching movie this weekend, this is the one for you.
Did you know: My Dog Dou Dou is the first local movie about dogs!
