It’s been a week of exciting trailer releases for upcoming movies in 2018. Here’s a look at five movie trailers that leave us wanting more.
Sicario 2: Soldado
In 2015, Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro brought us a glimpse of the drug cartels that rule the drug trade at the US Mexican border in Sicario. In the newly released Sicario 2: Soldado trailer, aimed for release in summer 2018, we can see the same gritty action as the first movie. And if the trailer is any indication, it seems this sequel, which is a direct next chapter, will unleash more violence. Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro return to stop the drug cartels from smuggling terrorists across the US border from Mexico. While Sicario was directed by Denis Villeneuve, known for his most recent work in Blade Runner: 2049 and The Arrival, this sequel is directed by Stefano Sollima, known more for his European movies. The trailer so far reveals a similar style to the first, but we’ll have to wait for next June to find out if it’s as edgy as the first.
Mamma Mia! Here we go Again
The party is back! In 2008, Meryl Streep and company gave us a riot of a movie, adapted from the popular musical Mamma Mia! While in theory, it may sound cheesy, but with veteran actors like Streep, Christine Baranski and Julie Walters, the movie revived our love for Swedish musical group, ABBA’s songs again. In this upcoming sequel, slated for release next July, we are reunited with the ensemble cast that includes Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgard, except that this isn’t a complete look-forward, but a major flashback. With Sophie being pregnant and running her mother’s villa, she isn’t sure if she can handle everything and seeks help from her mother’s best buds, Tania and Rosie, who use Donna (Streep)’s own experiences to encourage Sophie. We learn about Donna’s three great love stories and how she came into her own. The movie will feature the familiar songs from ABBA again, and because this is a totally new story, it’ll be interesting to see how Donna’s story transpired and will inspire Sophie. From the trailer, we aren’t exactly sure if Sophie is still with Sky (Dominic Cooper), her boyfriend from Mamma Mia! but what we’ve seen certainly looks promising so far.
Ocean’s 8
This has got to be the most anticipated movie next year. Since news broke that there will be a female reboot of Ocean’s 11 in 2015, all eyes are on the list of actresses picked to be part of the eight. Led by Sandra Bullock, who plays Danny Ocean’s (George Clooney) estranged sister Debbie, the band of women get together, including Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter and Sarah Paulson, to pull off the biggest heist of all- stealing at the star-studded, heavily guarded MET gala. The trailer reveals the same premise as Clooney and Brad Pitt’s Ocean 11 series, with Bullock and Blanchett going around, scouting for the right hands to do the right job in order to pull off the heist. Now, we wish June 2018 would come sooner!
Nutcracker and the Four Realms
Evoking a serious Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland feel, the trailer shows us a hint of the magical realm that a young girl (Mackenzie Foy) suddenly finds herself in. The story is unlike the Nutcracker tale we know. Clara seeks a key that could unlock a box left to her by her late mother, and when she was handed the coveted key, she gets transported into another world and must travel to the fourth realm to retrieve the key to return home.
With a regal queen (Keira Knightley), an army of soldiers and a snowy forest, the trailer shows us the magical world Clara was transported to, and the whole 100-second trailer is intriguing, mesmerising and makes us want more. But we’ll have to wait until November 2018 to unravel this mystical world.
Mortal Engines
This is the Peter Jackson movie we’ve been waiting for. Although it’s directed by relative new director Christian Rivers, who worked on the visual effects on The Lord of the Rings series, Jackson was heavily involved in the screenplay. And once you’ve seen the trailer, it’s easy to understand why Rivers is picked to be at the director’s helm, we’re in for a visual spectacle.
Looking a lot like Hayao Miyazaki’s Howl’s Moving Castle brought to live action, the movie hurtles us into a dystopian world a millennia after an epic "Sixty Minute War". The world is now desolate, with the major cities of the world now on giant wheels moving around, and the only way these cities can “survive” is by devouring smaller cities to replenish their resources. Adapted from the novel of the same name by Philip Reeve, Mortal Engines is slated for release in December 2018.
