The Favourite IS the favourite at this year’s Academy Awards. The movie, along with Roma, leads the nominations with an impressive 10 nods. Next is A Star Is Born with 8 nominations, although Bradley Cooper is missing in the Best Director nomination list. The three actresses from The Favourite, Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone are all nominated, which is a rarity.
Here is the list of nominations:
Best Picture
Bohemian Rhapsody
Green Book
The Favourite
Roma
Vice
A Star is Born
Never mind that the idea of the Most Popular Movie category got nixed. It looks like the most popular movies find themselves on this list anyway. Black Panther, a front-runner in that category that never saw the light of day, makes it to the Best Picture noms.
Best Actor
Christian Bale, Vice
Bradley Cooper, A Star Is Born
Willem Dafoe, At Eternity’s Gate
Rami Malek, Bohemian Rhapsody
Viggo Mortensen, Green Book
Hello Willem Dafoe. While the actor is missing from nominations in other awards, he turns up here, for his performance as Vincent Van Gogh, not that we mind.
Best Actress
Yalitza Aparicio, Roma
Glenn Close, The Wife
Olivia Colman, The Favourite
Lady Gaga, A Star Is Born
Melissa McCarthy, Can You Ever Forgive Me?
Yalitza Aparicio from Roma is a surprise entry, but seeing how the accolades for the movie are stacking up, it makes sense. However, where is Emily Blunt? Mary Poppins is noticeably missing from the leading ladies list. Also missing here is an unrecognisable Nicole Kidman for her performance in Destroyer and Mary Queen of Scots herself, Saoirse Ronan.
Best Supporting Actress
Amy Adams, Vice
Marina De Tavira, Roma
Regina King, If Beale Street Could Talk
Emma Stone, The Favourite
Rachel Weisz, The Favourite
While these women all deserve their nominations, we’d also like to see First Man’s Claire Foy and Queen Elizabeth Margot Robbie in Mary Queen of Scots. It’s a tad disappointing that both Robbie and Ronan, with their gripping portrayals of these strong historical women got snubbed.
Best Supporting Actor
Mahershala Ali, Green Book
Sam Elliott A Star is Born
Richard E. Grant, Can You Ever Forgive Me?
Sam Rockwell, Vice
Timothee Chalamat got snubbed! The actor’s turn in Beautiful Boy might have charmed at the other awards, but not the Oscars. It’s a good thing the actor has age on his side, he still has countless chances ahead of him.
Best Director
Alfonso Cuaron, Roma
Adam McKay, Vice
Yorgos Lanthimos, The Favourite
Pawel Pawlikowski, Cold War
He might have Best Actor, Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay nominations, but Bradley Cooper is apparently not Best Director material in the Academy’s eyes. Also missing from this list is Peter Farrelly, director of Green Book.
Here are the rest of the nominations:
Best Animated Film
The Incredibles 2
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Isle of Dogs
Mirai
Ralph Breaks the Internet
Adapted Screenplay
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs
If Beale Street Could Talk
A Star Is Born
Can You Ever Forgive Me?
Original Screenplay
The Favourite
First Reformed
Green Book
Vice
Roma
Best Foreign Language Film
Germany, Never Look Away
Japan, Shoplifters
Lebanon, Capernaum
Mexico, Roma
Poland, Cold War

“I’ll Fight” from RBG
“All The Stars” from Black Panther
“The Place Where Lost Things Go” from Mary Poppins Returns
“Shallow” from A Star Is Born
“When A Cowboy Trades His Spurs For Wings” from The Ballad of Buster Scruggs

The Academy Awards will be held on the 24th Febraury, 2019.
