Move over The Avengers, the X-Men are coming.

We’ve just gotten a first look at a flaming Phoenix from X-Men: Dark Phoenix, coming our way end of 2018 in the latest Entertainment Weekly issue.

With blazing hair, crackling skin, a sombre look and nothing else, the cover is oddly spellbinding, and gives us a sense of how dark Sophie Turner’s Phoenix will be in the new movie. It also shows her untamed power and leaves us little doubt that Jean Grey is the most powerful mutant - even more than Professor X (James McAvoy) - that ever lived.

The movie is set in 1992, a decade after the events of X-Men: Apocalypse (2016), where the X-Men were considered as heroes, not outcasts.

We’ve seen Jean unleased her raw power at the end of X-Men: Apocalypse, and in Dark Phoenix, she’ll be corrupted and cause chaos and destruction and it’s up to her fellow X-Men to stop the Dark Phoenix from annihilating the universe and combat an invading alien empire.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix will be the 13th instalment of the X-Men movie franchise and marks the new beginning of a new X-Men trilogy. Directed by long-time X-Men collaborator and first-time director Simon Kinberg, who also wrote the story (Kinberg also wrote the screenplay for X-Men: Apocalypse, X-Men: Days of Future Past and X-Men: The Last Stand), the film reunites James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Evan Peters.

Kinberg has worked on so many X-Men movies that he feels it was high time that he helms one, “[The film] was so clear in my head, emotionally and visually, that it would have killed me to hand this to somebody else to direct.”

There’s a newcomer in the mix - Jessica Chastain, whose character is shrouded in mystery. She would only reveal that she plays “an otherworldly shapeshifter.” Chastain is rumoured to play Lilandra, a major player in the Dark Phoenix comics, is set to capture and destroy the Dark Phoenix.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix will open in the theatres on 2 November 2018, and with what visuals we’ve seen so far, we cannot wait for more details on the movie to be revealed.
