Crayon Shinchan, known for his humorous personality and mischievous antics, takes center stage in "Battle Of Supernatural Powers ~Flying Sushi~”, the franchise’s first ever 3D film, directed by the talented Hitoshi Ohne! For those who don’t know Shinchan, also known as Shinnosuke Nohara, he is a five year old with sharp wit and bold behavior, often propelling him into various adventures. Created by popular Japanese manga artist Yoshito Usui, Shinchan’s character has gained popularity across the globe for his uncanny ability to evoke laughter in all people.

This film opens with Crayon Shinchan (voiced by Yumiko Kobayashi) who appears to live a mundane life with his mom, dad and younger sister Himawari Nohara (voiced by Satomo Kōrogi). Simultaneously, the film shows a man, Mitsuri Hiriya (voiced by Tori Matsuzaka), overburdened with depression and loneliness. Being bullied his whole life with no one supporting him, his life appears desolate. These two seem to lead such parallel lives, until a white and black supernatural light strikes both of them. Shinchan becomes the recipient of the white light, giving him a newfound sense of heroism, as well as teleportation abilities. Mitsuru Hiriya, on the other hand, succumbs to the corrupting influence of evil, intensifying his depression and transforming him into a controlled puppet-like creature. Shinchan must rise to the challenge and defeat this villain who strikes at every given corner, attacks innocent civilians and bombards classrooms. But, Shinchan is just a little boy in Kindergarten… How can he possibly defeat such a formidable opponent? The stakes are high, and the film keeps audiences on the edge of their seats, featuring a lively Sambomaster theme song that perfectly complements the exhilarating narrative.

Following the book of prophecy, Shinchan and his family commence on a precarious journey to confront the malicious forces that threaten to unleash havoc on their world. Amidst their battles, Shinchan finds comfort in indulging in his favorite treat — sushi — and draws strength from the support of his loyal family. Through the lens of Shinchan’s journey, the film reveals the themes of not letting destiny control you, and that as long as you have hard work and bravery, you can determine your own future. By emphasizing qualities like determination and courage, the movie encourages people to cherish loved ones, never give up, and remember to seize every given opportunity.

Not only does “Crayon Shinchan the Movie: Battle of Supernatural Powers ~ Flying Sushi ~” deliver a heartwarming storyline, the film also excels in their animations, which were marvelous. The vibrant colors, exaggerated figures, and precise execution of 3D bring the original comic book-inspired world to life. Not to mention, Shinchan surprises the audience with his yellow top and blue shorts outfit from the original comic, adding an extra layer of nostalgia.

This film was a riveting emotional journey that had me cackling one moment, fearful one scene, and teary eyed the next. Crayon Shinchan may seem like a kids movie, but it is truly a film for all and it offers profound messages that resonate with viewers of all ages. At the end of the film…. Just kidding.
